Is broad match wasting money in your Google Ads account?
Broad match can find customers you'd never have thought to bid on — or it can quietly spend budget on searches with nothing to do with your business. Which one happens in your account depends on how closely you watch the search terms report.
What is broad match, exactly?
Broad match is the default match type. Your ad can show for searches related to your keyword, including ones that don't contain the exact words, based on signals like the searcher's recent activity, your landing page, and other keywords in the ad group.
Google Ads describes broad match as the most comprehensive match type, matching all the searches of equivalent phrase and exact match keywords, plus additional related searches [1](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7478529). Google's own guidance also says it's critical to use Smart Bidding with broad match, because every search query is different and bids should reflect the signals present at auction time [2](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/12159290).
Why can broad match waste money?
Because 'related' can be interpreted more loosely than expected, broad match can match searches that share a theme with your keyword but not the intent behind it.
- A broad keyword for a paid service can match free or DIY searches on the same topic.
- A broad keyword for one service can match a related but different service you don't offer.
- Without Smart Bidding and active review, broad match can spend before you've had a chance to exclude irrelevant matches.

How do I check if it's happening in my account?
Open the search terms report, filter or sort by match type, and look specifically at what broad match keywords are triggering.
- Open Insights & reports → Search terms.
- Sort by cost and check the match type column for your broad match keywords.
- Flag any search term that doesn't reflect the intent you expected from that keyword.
- Note the total cost of search terms you'd exclude — that's your rough wasted-spend estimate from broad match.
What to do if broad match is wasting money
- Add the irrelevant search terms as negative keywords rather than abandoning broad match entirely.
- Check whether Smart Bidding is actually enabled on campaigns using broad match, since Google ties the two together.
- Consider testing phrase or exact match on your highest-spend, highest-intent keywords if broad match keeps drifting off-topic despite negatives.
- Review the landing page and other keywords in the ad group — broad match also uses those as signals, so a mismatched ad group can pull in the wrong searches.
Is broad match always the problem?
Not necessarily. Before blaming the match type, confirm conversion tracking is accurate — reported waste can sometimes be a tracking gap rather than genuinely irrelevant traffic.
Limitations of this guide
- Whether broad match helps or hurts depends on the account's bidding strategy, negatives, and how actively the search terms report is reviewed — it isn't universally good or bad.
Frequently asked questions
Should I avoid broad match entirely?
Not necessarily. Broad match can find valuable new searches, especially with Smart Bidding and an actively maintained negative keyword list. The risk is leaving it unmonitored.
Does broad match cost more per click?
Not inherently — cost depends on the auction for each specific search, not the match type itself.
What's the fastest way to limit broad match risk?
Review the search terms report weekly while using broad match, and add negatives as soon as an irrelevant pattern appears.
