How to find wasted spend in Google Ads

Wasted spend is money paid for clicks that had no realistic chance of becoming customers. The biggest sources are usually irrelevant searches, spending that can't be judged because tracking is broken, and ads shown outside the areas or hours you serve. You can find most of it in six places in your account.

What counts as wasted spend?

Spend is wasted when the click could never have become a customer — not simply when a click didn't convert. Some non-converting clicks are a normal cost of advertising.

That distinction matters. Cutting everything that didn't convert last week can remove the searches that bring customers next month. Focus on spend that is clearly irrelevant or clearly unmeasured.

The six places to check

How do negative keywords reduce waste?

Negative keywords stop your ads showing for searches you choose to exclude. Google notes that negatives don't automatically match close variants, so you may need to add plurals or misspellings separately.

  • Exact-match negatives block only that exact search — the safest option.
  • Phrase and broad negatives block more, and can accidentally block good searches.
  • Review your search terms report regularly; new irrelevant searches appear over time.

Estimate your own wasted spend

We don't publish an 'average wasted spend' figure; it varies too much between accounts. Your own report is the only reliable number.

  1. Export the search terms report for the last 30 days.
  2. Mark each costly search as relevant, unclear or irrelevant.
  3. Add up the cost of the irrelevant ones. That is a conservative estimate of avoidable spend for that period.

Limitations of this guide

  • Labelling searches as irrelevant is a judgement call — when unsure, watch it rather than exclude it.
