Which Google Ads search terms are wasting your money?
Your keywords are what you bid on; search terms are what people actually typed. The gap between the two is where most wasted spend hides. Reviewing search terms by cost is the single most useful check in most accounts.
How do I find wasted search terms?
Open the search terms report for the last 90 days, sort by cost, and look at the searches with spend but no recorded conversions.
- Set the date range to the last 90 days
- Sort by cost, highest first
- Mark searches a customer would never type
- Look for patterns, not just single searches
Common patterns of waste
Most waste falls into a few groups that repeat across industries.
| Pattern | Example intent | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Jobs and training | Looking for work or a course | Exclude job and course words |
| DIY | Wants to do it themselves | Exclude how-to words |
| Wrong product | Wants something you don't sell | Exclude that product |
| Wrong place | Outside your area | Fix location settings |
| Competitor names | Wants another business | Review case by case |

Be careful with tracking first
If conversion tracking is broken, a search can look wasteful when it actually brought customers.
Confirm conversions are being recorded before excluding searches based on 'no conversions'.
Excluding without blocking customers
Use negative keywords for clear patterns, and check the effect after a week.
Over-broad negatives can block real customers. Start with obvious words, then review again.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I review search terms?
Weekly for busy accounts, monthly for small ones. New searches appear all the time, especially with broad match.
Why can't I see every search term?
Google doesn't show searches that very few people made. The visible ones still usually account for most of the spend.
Does Claritad show my wasted search terms?
The free audit shows your total spend on searches with no recorded conversions. Paid plans show the full list of searches with their cost.
